Atenas Grécia Olympic Stadium and Games

Olympic Stadium and Games

The Olympic stadium is the modern hi-tech sports complex, completely refurbished under a design by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It is situated at Marousi, northeast Athens, Greece. The complex comprises several specialised venues.

The Olympic indoor hall was completed in 1995 and was the chief venue for artistic gymnastic and trampolining, and also hosted the finals of the basketball matches. It was the largest venue used during 2004 Olympics. The complex is notable for its distinctive A-frame roof, the capacity of the amphitheatre is approximately 17,500. It serves now as a home court for Panathinaikos basketball club. 6 May, 2007 it hosted the Euroleague Final Four, the semi-final and final round of the principal European basketball competition, which brought victory to the home club, Panathinaikos.

Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre consists of two outdoor pools and an indoor pool, which was built for 1991 Mediterranean Games. It was expanded and reconstructed for 2004 Summer Olympics. The larger of outdoor pools hosted swimming and water polo events, the smaller – synchronised swimming, and the indoor pool hosted diving competitions.

Athens Olympic Tennis centre is a group of 16 tennis courts, which comprises main stadium with the capacity of 8,600 spectators, two semi-final courts, seating 4,300 spectators, and thirteen side courts for 200 people each. The centre was officially opened on August 2, 2004. It was built using latest technologies, such as DecoTurf cushioned acrylic surface, featured at the US Open Great Slam event.

Athens Olympic Velodrome was constructed in 1991 for Mediterranean Games, and extensively reconstructed for 2004 Olympics cycling events. The stadium, with the capacity of 5,250 people, features the track of Afzelia wood, 250 m long and 7,5 m wide, and distinctive twin roofs, covering the sides of the track.

Olympic Stadium was the venue for the most significant moments of the Games, including solemn Opening and Closing ceremonies, principal athletic events and soccer final. Now it is home field for Panathinaikos and AEK, two major Greek football clubs.
